Sending zloty to leu? Polish banks quietly add 3-8% in hidden FX margins on this corridor. Digital providers like Wise, Revolut, and Remitly cut that cost dramatically and deliver to Banca Transilvania or BCR within hours.
In Romania, recipients can access funds directly at Banca Transilvania, the country's largest financial institution. By using Wise instead of a traditional bank wire, your recipient gets approximately 50 RON more on a $1,000 transfer — because digital providers pass the real exchange rate directly. Worth knowing about the local currency: Romania's 500 lei note features poet Mihai Eminescu, considered the national poet; his image has appeared on Romanian currency since 1992.
Our verdict: Use Wise for transparent pricing on transfers above 1,000 PLN, and Revolut for small, instant transfers within its free monthly allowance.
The PLN to RON corridor is small but active. Polish companies hire Romanian seasonal workers, families split across both EU states send money home, and freelancers invoice across the border in zloty or leu. Banks treat this as an exotic flow — even though both currencies are EU adjacent — and charge accordingly. Digital providers price it like any other intra-Europe transfer: tight margins, fast settlement, no branch visit.
If you're sending under 10,000 PLN, a digital provider will almost always beat your bank by 3% to 6% on total cost. For larger amounts the gap widens because banks apply percentage-based FX margins on top of fixed fees.
Two costs matter: the exchange rate markup and the upfront fee. Polish banks like PKO BP or mBank typically add 2.5% to 4% on the PLN/RON mid-market rate, then tack on a 15-40 PLN SWIFT fee. That's the hidden tax most senders never notice.
Digital providers flip the model. Wise charges roughly 0.5%-0.7% of the amount with zero FX markup. Revolut is free up to a monthly limit on standard plans. Remitly uses a flat fee plus a small spread. Always check the leu amount the recipient actually receives — that number is the only honest comparison.
Wise is the default winner for transparency. You pay the mid-market rate and a visible fee, full stop. Revolut beats Wise on small transfers within free allowance but applies weekend markups of 1% that catch people off guard. Remitly is competitive on first-transfer promos and on its Economy tier, but its Express rate carries a wider spread. WorldRemit sits in the middle — useful if your recipient prefers cash pickup over a bank deposit.
Against any Polish bank, expect 3% to 8% in total savings depending on amount. On a 5,000 PLN transfer, that's 150 to 400 PLN staying in your pocket.
Speed depends on what you pay for. Wise delivers most PLN to RON transfers in under 2 hours when funded by card; bank-funded transfers can take a business day. Revolut moves Revolut-to-Revolut instantly and free. Remitly Express lands within minutes; Economy takes 3-5 business days but costs less.
Use instant rails when paying rent, medical bills, or urgent family needs. Use economy options for routine support payments — the savings compound month after month.
Most digital providers deliver directly to local Romanian accounts using SEPA or local rails. The two largest receiving banks in Romania are Banca Transilvania and BCR (part of the Erste Group), and every major provider supports direct deposits to both. This matters because Romania is the EU's largest remittance recipient in Eastern Europe — over 3.5 million Romanians work abroad, primarily in Italy, Germany, and Spain, which means the local banking infrastructure is built around fast, cheap inbound transfers.
If your recipient doesn't have a bank account, WorldRemit and Remitly support cash pickup at agents across Bucharest, Cluj, and Timișoara. Mobile wallets are still a niche channel in Romania compared to bank deposits.
Standard banking regulations apply for sending from Poland to Romania. Both countries operate under EU AML rules, so transfers above 15,000 EUR equivalent trigger source-of-funds checks. Personal gifts between family members are not taxable in Romania, but recurring business payments may need documentation on the recipient side. Keep your transfer receipts — Polish tax authorities can ask for proof of outbound flows during audits.
PLN/RON is fairly stable since both currencies track the euro loosely, but small swings still matter on large amounts. Avoid sending on weekends — Revolut and some card-funded providers apply weekend FX surcharges of around 1%. Mid-week mornings during European trading hours give you the tightest spreads.
Set rate alerts on Wise or Revolut if you're sending over 5,000 PLN. For amounts above 20,000 PLN, split the transfer across two days to average out volatility. And always run a quick three-way comparison before hitting send — five minutes of checking can save more than the coffee you'd buy with the difference.
