Sending money from Israel to Guatemala does not have to mean steep bank fees and poor exchange rates. With the right digital provider, you can cut costs by 3-8% and have funds delivered to a Banrural or Banco Industrial account in as little as a few hours.
In Guatemala, recipients can access funds directly at Banco Industrial, the country's largest financial institution. By using Revolut instead of a traditional bank wire, your recipient gets approximately 115 GTQ more on a $1,000 transfer — because digital providers pass the real exchange rate directly. Worth knowing about the local currency: Guatemala's Q200 quetzal note depicts the resplendent quetzal bird — a species so fragile it rarely survives in captivity.
Our verdict: Compare the total cost (flat fee plus exchange rate markup) across Wise, Remitly, and Revolut before every transfer — the cheapest provider often changes week to week.
Before you initiate any transfer, take a moment to understand the route. The Israel-to-Guatemala corridor is a relatively low-volume but growing path, typically used by Israeli businesses paying Guatemalan suppliers, expats supporting family back home, NGOs funding development projects, and individuals purchasing property or covering tuition. Context matters here: remittances to Guatemala represent over 19% of GDP — the highest ratio in Central America — driven by a large diaspora in the United States. While most remittances flow from the US, the infrastructure built to handle that volume benefits senders from Israel too, since Guatemalan banks and cash pickup networks are well-equipped to receive foreign currency efficiently.
Now look closely at how providers actually charge you. There are two costs in every transfer, and beginners often only notice one. The flat fee is the obvious upfront charge — usually 5 to 30 ILS. The exchange rate markup is the sneaky one: providers quote you a worse rate than the real mid-market rate (the one you see on Google) and pocket the difference. Always do this check:
This is where most of your savings come from. Israeli banks like Bank Hapoalim, Leumi, or Discount typically apply exchange rate markups of 3% to 8% on top of wire fees that can reach 100 ILS or more. Digital providers — Wise, Remitly, Revolut, and WorldRemit — operate on much thinner margins and pass the savings on to you. On a 5,000 ILS transfer, switching from a bank wire to Wise or Remitly can save you 150 to 400 ILS instantly. Wise tends to lead on transparency, Remitly often runs first-transfer promotional rates, and Revolut is convenient if you already hold a multi-currency account.
Speed costs money, but only sometimes. Here is how to decide:
Ask your recipient how they prefer to receive the money before you set up the transfer. The two largest receiving banks in Guatemala are Banrural and Banco Industrial, and most digital providers can deliver directly to accounts at these banks via standard bank deposit. If your recipient does not have a bank account, cash pickup at locations like Banrural branches or Western Union agents is widely available across the country. For account deposits, you will need the recipient's full legal name (matching their DPI national ID), the bank name, and the account number.
Standard banking regulations apply for sending from Israel to Guatemala. For transfers above roughly 50,000 ILS, expect your provider to request proof of source of funds — payslips, tax returns, or a sale contract. Have these documents ready as PDFs before you start, or your transfer will sit in review for days.
Finally, do not just transfer the moment you log in. The ILS/GTQ pair fluctuates 1-2% within a typical month. Set rate alerts on Wise or Revolut for your target rate, and when the alert triggers, transfer quickly. For amounts above 10,000 ILS, the savings from a half-percent better rate can easily exceed the entire fee. Mid-week mornings (Tuesday to Thursday) tend to offer tighter spreads than Mondays or Fridays. Once your first transfer goes through cleanly, save the recipient details so future sends take under a minute.
