Sending euros from Greece to Peru doesn't have to mean losing 5% to your bank. Digital providers like Wise, Remitly, and Revolut deliver PEN to BCP, Scotiabank Perú, or Yape wallets at near mid-market rates. Here's how to pick the right one for your transfer size and speed.
In Peru, recipients can access funds directly at BCP — Banco de Crédito del Perú, the country's largest financial institution. By using Revolut instead of a traditional bank wire, your recipient gets approximately 165 PEN more on a $1,000 transfer — because digital providers pass the real exchange rate directly. Worth knowing about the local currency: the S/200 sol note showcases Machu Picchu and uses a window thread that glows under UV light.
Our verdict: For most Greece-to-Peru transfers above €500, Wise to a BCP account gives you the best rate with full transparency — switch to Remitly Express only when you need money in a Yape wallet within minutes.
The EUR to PEN route isn't massive, but it's steady. Most senders are Peruvian expats working in Athens, Thessaloniki, or the islands supporting family back home. There's also a growing slice of Greek retirees, freelancers, and small business owners paying contractors or buying property in Lima, Cusco, or Arequipa. The corridor is unglamorous but reliable — and that's precisely where banks quietly overcharge you.
Here's the trick nobody at your branch will explain. The "no fee" transfer your Greek bank advertises usually hides a 3% to 5% exchange rate markup. So you save €10 on a flat fee, then lose €40 on a €1,000 transfer because your EUR-to-PEN rate is worse than the mid-market rate you'd see on Google. The flat fee is honest. The markup is the trap. Always compare the final PEN amount your recipient gets — that's the only number that matters.
Wise, Remitly, Revolut, and WorldRemit consistently beat Greek banks like Piraeus, Eurobank, and Alpha Bank by 3% to 8% on the EUR/PEN pair. Wise is the gold standard for transparency — it gives you the mid-market rate plus a small visible fee, usually under 0.7%. Revolut is excellent if you already hold a multi-currency account in Greece and want to transfer in two taps. Remitly is the strongest choice for cash pickup and mobile wallet deposits in Peru, and WorldRemit sits in the middle with solid coverage of Peruvian bank accounts. For pure cost on transfers above €500, Wise typically wins. For speed and convenience under €300, Remitly often edges ahead.
Peru's digital banking infrastructure has matured fast. The SBS, Peru's financial regulator, licensed over 20 digital remittance platforms in 2023, and the Yape and Plin mobile wallets now cover more than 10 million users for instant deposits. That means a Remitly Express transfer can land in your sister's Yape wallet in under 10 minutes. The trade-off is cost — instant transfers usually carry a 1% to 2% premium. If your recipient doesn't need the money tonight, the economy option (1-2 business days) saves real euros. Use instant for emergencies, school fees, or medical bills. Use economy for rent and routine support.
The two largest receiving banks in Peru are BCP (Banco de Crédito del Perú) and Scotiabank Perú, and most digital providers deliver directly to accounts at both without extra correspondent fees. BCP has the widest branch and ATM footprint, so if your recipient lives outside Lima, that's usually the smoother choice. Scotiabank Perú tends to process incoming international wires slightly faster on weekday mornings. Standard banking regulations apply for sending from Greece to Peru — there are no special remittance taxes on the Peruvian side for personal transfers, but transfers above $10,000 USD equivalent will trigger automatic SBS reporting on the receiving end, which is routine and not a problem for legitimate family support.
Time your transfers. The EUR/PEN pair tends to move on European session opens — between 09:00 and 11:00 Athens time — so check rates mid-morning rather than at midnight. Set rate alerts on Wise or Revolut for your target rate; the EUR/PEN can swing 2% in a week, and that's €60 on a €3,000 transfer.
Mind your amount thresholds. Most providers offer better effective rates above €1,000, with Wise dropping its percentage fee meaningfully past €2,000. If you're sending monthly, consider batching two months into one transfer to cross that threshold. Avoid sending tiny amounts under €100 — flat fees eat you alive at that level. And never, ever use Western Union or MoneyGram unless cash pickup in a remote Peruvian village is the only option. Their rates are 6% to 9% worse than Wise on this corridor.
The bottom line: open a Wise account, link your Greek IBAN, send to a BCP or Scotiabank Perú account, and stop donating to your bank.
